While Riyadh has undoubtedly become home to some of the world's most renowned restaurants offering excellent haute cuisine, it still continues to surprise us with hidden gems.

It is these hidden gems that offer us rustic simplicity away from the overtly polished perfection often found in modern restaurants and cafes, and allows us to reconnect with tradition and nostalgia. It is locations like this, hidden from the main thoroughfares and go-to destinations pinned on Instagram which allow us to enjoy some quality R&R, reviving that nostalgic essence of eateries and cafés of the past, fostering a sense of togetherness through communication and camaraderie.

And it is this sense of nostalgia and community spirit that we felt when visiting Nabaa Al Diriyah, where the ambience is down-to-earth and the staff is truly welcoming.

Here, you can easily chat with others in the serene outdoor seating area, while relishing the sight and aroma of freshly baked pastries and pies. The surroundings are similar to those found in the humble eateries in the Lebanese mountains, says restaurant manager Mansour Al-Salman.

"We aim to offer simple yet diverse experiences at Nabaa Al Diriyah. The outdoor area has a rustic vibe, distinguished by the oven and simple furnishings, and another part has a Greek touch inspired by the island of Mykonos, characterised by white walls, blue windows, and different flowers and plants. As for our menu, it celebrates Mediterranean cuisines, such as Italian pizza, Levantine pies, and other assorted dishes."

Al-Salman adds that the honeycomb or nabaa cheese pies are some of the cafe's most requested, often paired with a pot of warm, traditional tea. Additionally, the V60 coffee is a favourite among many visitors, and of course, what is a Saudi cafe without a delicious offering of freshly brewed Saudi coffee.

Nabaa Al Diriyah is adorned with colourful flowers climbing the white walls, and freshly potted plants and flowers can be also be found in uniquely positioned flower pots within a wheelbarrow and bicycle basket for example. The twinkling hanging lights also add the ambiance of the outside area, making the cosy courtyard a picture perfect location.

The tea and coffee is served on beautiful warmers, and the food is served on practical yet aesthetic wooden boards, each quirk only lending further to the unique and distinctive character of the cafe.

Even in the winter, Nabaa Al Diriyah continues to be a great location for a bite to eat or a cup of coffee. Guests can sit around specially crafted fire pits, and specially equipped tables - ideal for sitting outside, whilst still keeping warm as you enjoy the delicious flavours of hot, savoury pies coming straight from the oven.
